Easter is celebrated by Christians around the globe every year, but what is it all about? Listen to our podcast episode on this life-changing subject, or read more about it below.
We’ve all attempted to turn over a new leaf, haven’t we? It’s not too long until we find ourselves falling back into old habits. The Bible explains why this happens. We may have the desire to do what is right, but often we lack the ability to do it, or just choose to do what is wrong; this is because of the ‘human nature’ that we are all born with. The Bible describes our lack of righteousness and our wrongdoing as “sin”, which has separated us all from God, because He is sinless and we are sinful, as demonstrated in Romans 3:23: “all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God”.
That is where the events of Easter come in.
It is far more than a date on the calendar. At its core, Easter is all about Jesus Christ and His death and resurrection and the life-changing impact it has on those that believe on Him; in fact, that is what the Bible is all about.
The reason why Christians call ‘Good Friday’ ‘Good’ is because on that day, Jesus Christ died to make a way for sinners to be saved from their sin. In fact, He suffered the punishment that we deserve for our sins so that we don’t have to. Imagine being guilty of a crime but instead of serving the sentence, someone steps in and serves it for you – that’s what the Lord Jesus did on the cross! This means that anyone that repents of their sinful ways and trusts the Lord Jesus benefits from what He did – they’re forgiven of all their sins; past, present, and future; they have new life and a relationship with God; they have a home in Heaven!
On Easter Sunday, Christians remember the resurrection of the Lord Jesus. Having died upon the cross, Jesus Christ rose again from the dead! Without the resurrection, there is no hope, no forgiveness, and no good news. As the Apostle Paul wrote, “And if Christ be not risen, then is our preaching vain, and your faith is also vain” (1 Corinthians 15:14). He rose in triumph, conquering sin, death, and the devil. The resurrection confirms that Jesus is who He claimed to be—the Son of God and the Saviour of the world, and that what He did was sufficient to save any sinner who believes on Him.
So, Easter is not just about what happened over two thousand years ago; it’s about what those events mean today. It means hope, life, and victory for anyone who trusts in Jesus Christ.
Ultimately, Easter demands a response. It is an invitation for sinners to believe and follow the risen Lord Jesus and receive the new life He offers. Will you?
